Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) Customer Service Center

ROI worked on a consulting team brought to Sacramento by S. David Freeman (later, the General Manager of the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, currently, an advisor to the State of California) near the end of his tenure at SMUD to ensure that the SMUD Customer Service Center was a state of the art facility, extremely friendly to the building occupants, while exceeding the California State Energy Code to the greatest extent possible.  One goal of our mission was to give the occupants the greatest control possible over the conditions in their workplace, while minimizing the energy impact associated with this freedom.

To this end, a portion of the building was allocated to be air conditioned using underfloor air.  This was a relatively new concept to most engineers that had not been involved in data center HVAC systems.

Each occupant in the space has total control over the temperature in their area through the use of manually adjustable Krantz air diffusers.

A high efficiency chiller plant coupled with Thermal Energy Storage provides the cooling to the facility.

This design has proven to be so successful that a wide variety of engineers and manufacturers tour the facility on a regular basis, gleaning design tips from the site.
